In a world where we’re constantly rushing—measuring our lives by the hours, days, and years—it’s easy to lose sight of the deeper truths that transcend time itself. We tend to think of time as linear, a one-way street where we move forward from birth to death, from sunrise to sunset. But what if time, as we know it, is just a construct—an illusion that limits our understanding of something far greater? And what does that mean for us, created in the likeness of God?
The Infinite Within the Finite
To be made in the likeness of God is to embody something eternal within a temporary frame. We’re spiritual beings having a human experience, yet so much of our existence is defined by time: deadlines, routines, and even the ticking of the biological clock. But God, the creator of all things, exists outside of time. That means the likeness we bear is not bound by the minutes we count.
Think about it: the divine spark within us is infinite. It doesn’t age, it doesn’t expire, and it isn’t confined to the past, present, or future. It simply is. In this way, our truest self—the part of us that reflects God—is timeless.
Time as a Teacher
While time might be a construct, it serves a purpose in this human experience. Time teaches us patience, urgency, and perspective. Without it, we wouldn’t grasp the beauty of fleeting moments or the wisdom that comes from enduring seasons of growth. God may be eternal, but we are here, right now, in this moment. That duality—the infinite soul living in a finite world—is part of the miracle of creation.
Time humbles us, reminding us of our limitations. But it also empowers us. Each day, each hour is an opportunity to grow closer to the divine likeness we were made to reflect.
Stepping Beyond Time
So how do we step outside the construct of time while still living within it? It’s a paradox, but one that becomes clearer when we focus on being present. Presence is timeless. When you’re fully here—whether in conversation, prayer, or even just a quiet moment with nature—you’re touching something eternal.
God isn’t found in the frantic rush from one obligation to the next. God is found in the stillness, in the connections we make, and in the love we give. That love, that connection, is timeless.
Living in the Likeness
To live in the likeness of God means to align ourselves with what is eternal: love, truth, and purpose. It means understanding that while our days are numbered, our impact can ripple beyond the boundaries of time. When we create, nurture, and uplift, we reflect a divine eternity that isn’t confined by the hours on a clock.
So, let’s stop measuring our worth by how much we can get done in a day or how quickly we can reach a milestone. Instead, let’s focus on being—fully, authentically, and in alignment with the timeless essence we carry within.
In the end, time may be a construct, but our connection to the divine—and to each other—is eternal. And in that truth, we find freedom.
