Grief comes in many forms, each unique in how it affects us emotionally and physically. Whether grieving a loved one, a lost opportunity, or a life transition, understanding the types and stages of grief can be empowering. Grief isn’t just about sadness; it often includes denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, each calling for different self-regulation tools.

When denial hits, grounding techniques like deep breathing or mindful awareness help us connect to the present moment. During anger, movement—be it a walk, exercise, or just shaking it off—releases pent-up energy and gives space to process. In bargaining, we may struggle with “what-ifs” or guilt, so journaling or talking to a trusted friend can be healing. Depression can feel overwhelming, making self-care non-negotiable. This might look like rest, nourishing meals, and reaching out to support networks. Acceptance doesn’t mean “moving on,” but rather integrating the loss. Here, mindfulness and gratitude practices can foster resilience.

By recognizing the stage you’re in and meeting yourself with compassion, you cultivate resilience in the face of grief. Grieving is a journey, not a linear process; honor each phase, and allow yourself the space to heal.
